More Information About Health Insurance Coverage in your State:

Some health insurance plans are available to everyone, no matter which state you call home.

A law passed in 1985 called COBRA assures you that, as long as you are employed by a company of 20 or more employees, your insurance will continue after you leave your job. Your dependents, as well, continue to be covered for a specific amount of time after you cease employment. You are expected to pay the premiums despite the fact that you no longer receive a paycheck, but the upside is that you have access to health insurance for a prescribed length of time. For more details, contact your employer.

Some states allow you the option of applying for a conversion policy when you leave a job with a group health plan. Contact your state’s Department of Insurance for clarification.

Every state offers special group health insurance options to newborn, adopted, disabled, and, occasionally, grandchildren of the group member, as long as there is dependent coverage in the plan. For more information, contact your employer for details.

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is another federal law which assists you in purchasing health insurance. It stipulates that states are permitted to modify the law. This means that there are state by state variations of HIPAA. For details, contact your state’s Department of Insurance. They will provide you with a list of eligibilities and apply them to the type of insurance you are purchasing.
