CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (BCBS)

As the largest health insurance provider in the Mid-Atlantic region, Care First Blue Cross and Blue Shield boast more than 3.4 million members (as of 2009). In addition, more than 80% of the health care providers and facilities in Maryland, Washington D.C., and Northern Virginia are participants in its provider networks. That means that 165 hospitals in Maryland, D.C., and Northern Virginia are in their network.

Care First Blue Cross and Blue Shield has the distinction of 11 national Brand Excellence awards for its customer service, financial strength, membership growth and promotion of the Blue name. They were also "Excellent" by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for its BlueChoice HMO and full NCQA accreditation for its BluePreferred PPO.

Their HMO subsidiary, CareFirst BlueChoice, is a licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association and features 4,500 primary care physicians.
