business owners who took action in 1936 and pooled their savings
to launch a not-for-profit company called Hospital Service Corporation.
This company offered an affordable pre-paid hospital plan, which
was a revelation for the time. Eventually this company became
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois.
Today, Blue Cross and Blue Shield
of Illinois is the largest health insurance company in Illinois
and, as of 2009, covers over 6.5 million people with a wide range of affordable
health insurance policies. Technologically innovative and resourceful,
their specialty is Blue Access for Members, which offers group
health plan members and their dependents the secure online access
to benefit information, claim status, provider information,
and priceless health information.
